State Unveils Designs for Transportation Hub Project in Downtown Atlanta
A plan to transform a large swath of concrete and parking lot space in downtown Atlanta into a modern transportation hub is moving forward.
The development team for the Gulch area, located near the Georgia Dome and CNN Center, has unveiled three possible designs for the project.
They all involve sleek enclosed terminals connected to office space and park grounds.
“The overall goal is give Atlanta options – buses, bicycles, taxis, streetcar connectivity to the Beltine, maybe even have Amtrak come into the station – combine all those into one area to make it convenient,” said Derrick Cameron, the manager of the project for the Georgia Department of Transportation.
Cameron leads a development team that consists of three contracted design firms and a group of environmental planners. The state has provided $12 million to support the team.
Cameron says one of the three designs will be selected by October.
“The process is to take a look at them all and evaluate them all in regards to traffic and parking…plus we think with this facility it could be a catalyst for development.”
Cameron says a final design and environmental plan is expected by 2014 but funding still needs to be secured for actual construction.
