STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — The mayor of Stone Mountain is facing new allegations related to removing other city officials from the city’s bank accounts.

The wife of the mayor pro tem has also filed a police report against the mayor regarding the allegations.

The public will receive an update during a special called Stone Mountain City Council meeting on May 12. The meeting will be held at Stone Mountain City Hall, located at 875 Main Street. It starts at 6:30 p.m. One of the items being considered is a request to hire an independent investigator to look into the allegations against Mayor Beverly Jones. This follows a regular meeting on May 6, during which the council asked the city attorney to draft a resolution to remove Jones’ authority to make financial decisions on behalf of the city, pending an inquiry.

Since that meeting, Decaturish learned that Jones gained control over numerous city accounts, including an account for the city’s Downtown Development Authority, which is not controlled by the council. Records also reveal she was granted access to those accounts on April 2, meaning she had control for over a month before other city officials knew what happened. She also removed two other signers from city accounts: Mayor Pro Tem Ryan Smith and Councilmember Teresa Crowe.
