Two collections of documents from the presidential administration of Jimmy Carter are now digitized and online for public viewing and research.

Sheila McAlister, director of the Digital Library of Georgia, says it’s important to make the documents accessible to everyone with an internet connection, especially with the ongoing pandemic.

And with thousands of documents included in the two collections, McAlister says it can be somewhat overwhelming.

“The Jimmy Carter daily diary is going to be really interesting to folks,” said McAlister. “It’s going to be an excellent place to start so you know where to go to delve into certain topics. And just to get an idea of the variety of people that the president interacted with. I would say it’s an encapsulation of all of the work of his administration.”

McAlister says the Carter Presidential Library handled the scanning of the documents, but her staff was in charge of describing the documents and making them more searchable. She says that process took six months.

“These are all really interesting collections to look at from our modern perspective,” said McAlister.
