Poet and author Dr. Joshua Bennett describes his latest book, “WE (The People of the United States)” as “a book I’ve been writing my entire life.” The collection is divided into two sections — “We” and “The People of the United States.” It explores themes of identity, creativity and the ways African Americans have shaped every aspect of American life.

As the U.S. approaches its 250th anniversary, Bennett says the milestone serves as a backdrop for the collection.

Bennett spoke with Rose Scott, host of “Closer Look,” about the book, which contains 56 sections. Each piece is dedicated to a specific person, place or concern. He said the project also reflects his personal life, including building a family with his wife, Pam, in Massachusetts.
