Kinda Hanano is pictured with her son, Esmat Hanano. They have been listening to StoryCorps on the radio for years and were happy to record their own conversation when StoryCorps Atlanta visited Alif Institute in February 2022. (StoryCorps Atlanta)

If you’ve ever moved to another country, you may know about homesickness, language barriers and simple things, like not knowing where to buy groceries. Such was the case for Kinda Hanano. She immigrated from Aleppo, Syria, 30 years ago. In this conversation with her son, Esmat, she explains why she moved with her family to Atlanta.

This story was produced locally for WABE by Brenda Ford and recorded in partnership with the Atlanta History Center. This interview is part of the Anwar Collection of Muslim Voices through StoryCorps’ American Pathways initiative. The initiative is made possible by the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art and an Anonymous Foundation. Additional support is provided by the Stuart Family Foundation.

StoryCorps’ American Pathways records the lives and stories of refugees, asylum seekers, immigrants and Muslims from across the country. Recording a StoryCorps conversation is easier than you’d think. To learn more about making a virtual or in person reservation, click here.
