Georgia is home to 10 historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
State Sen. Sonya Halpern says those schools have experienced challenges over the years, as have their communities and neighborhoods. After a year of work on the legislation, Halpern has introduced Senate Bill 235, the HBCU Innovation and Economic Prosperity Planning Districts Act.
It passed the State Senate on Feb. 26 and is currently in the House.
