On the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination in Memphis, Tennessee, his family gathered Wednesday night on Atlanta’s Auburn Avenue at the graves of King and his wife, Coretta Scott King.
At 7:01 p.m., the hour 50 years ago when King was shot, his children, Martin III, Dexter and Bernice, and their families stood next to each other, joining others around the country in ringing a bell 39 times. That was King’s age when he died.
Earlier, at a speech in the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church next door, Bernice King told those sitting in the pews that her father fought his entire life to ensure the inclusion of everyone.
