Record warmth this winter fueled a deadly tornado outbreak across parts of Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana and Arkansas in March. Then tornadoes killed multiple people and injured at least 35 others in Iowa. Recent twisters have even struck in places unaccustomed to them, such as one near Los Angeles in 2023 that tore apart rooftops and injured one person.
All of Georgia is prone to tornadoes, as shown in this map from the National Weather Service depicting tornadoes in Georgia from 1950-2014. A tornado struck metro Atlanta in 2008 causing half a billion dollars in damage, including to the former CNN Center and Georgia Dome, the Georgia World Congress Center and other downtown buildings, according to the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency.
