A new book reveals how some landowners in the South used “forced apprenticeships” backed by the court system to re-enslave Black children after the Civil War and the ratification of the 13th Amendment.
In the book, “Slavery After Slavery,” Dr. Mary Frances Berry, who is an acclaimed historian, educator and activist, writes about the court cases of several children who were forced to work and intentionally separated from their families.
On Monday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Berry talked with show host Rose Scott about the research for her book and details what she believes are the modern-day consequences of re-enslavement.
