Artist and craftsman Paa Joe has made a name for himself building fantasy coffins in Ghana, fantastical works of art handcrafted in whatever style the buyer wants.
In Atlanta, High Museum’s latest exhibition, “The Gates of No Return,” highlights more somber aspects of his work, wood sculptures modeled after the many slave fortresses that line the coast of Ghana.
Katie Jentleson, curator of folk and self-taught art at the High Museum of Art, joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes earlier in the week to talk about the exhibition.
