A host of WNBA players are urging fans to vote for the Rev. Raphael Warnock in his bid against the Atlanta Dream’s co-owner, U.S. Sen. Kelly Loeffler of Georgia.
They are in a crowded field running in a Nov. 3 special election for Loeffler’s seat.
Loeffler has spoken out publicly against the league’s social justice plans and sent a letter to WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert objecting to the initiatives to honor the Black Lives Matter movement once the season began last month. The senator is facing opposition not only from Warnock, senior pastor of Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church, but also from many in the WNBA, including players from the Dream, Seattle Storm, Chicago Sky and Phoenix Mercury.
