Scientists from the University of Georgia are testing alligators for mercury — and learning more about the whole ecosystem while they do it.

Kristen Zemaitis, the lead author of the study, graduated from the University of Georgia’s Odum School of Ecology and has worked with other reptiles like sea turtles, snakes and terrapins on top of gators.

The expert says the UGA team studied alligators at three different sites — Jekyll Island, the Okefenokee Swamp and the Yawkey Wildlife Center in South Carolina.
