School districts in Georgia have still not seen a return to pre-pandemic levels of chronic absenteeism, which is when students miss 10% or more of the school year.

In the 2018-19 and 2019-20 school years, Georgia’s chronic absenteeism rates were 12.1% and 8.1%, respectively. In the years after, the rates have hovered around 20%, with the highest being 23.9% in the 2021-22 school year.

National post-pandemic chronic absenteeism rates were even higher, with rates at 31% in the 2021-22 school year and 28% in the 2022-23 school year, according to the U.S. Department of Education.
