Atlanta-area rapper Victor Mariachi is the only American-born citizen in his immediate family. He said his family’s citizenship status has always been a concern whenever they engaged with the police, and it’s a topic he’s explored in his music.

Recently, amid the ongoing national immigration crackdown under the Trump administration, Mariachi’s family made the urgent decision to self-deport from Georgia to Mexico.

On Wednesday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Mariachi talked with program host Rose Scott about how the unfolding situation has taken an emotional toll on him and his family. He also shared how the situation has influenced his artistic work and upcoming album and why he has made the decision to remain in the U.S.
