The Georgia Department of Agriculture confirmed a new case of the highly pathogenic avian influenza at a commercial facility in Walker County, Georgia, on Wednesday.

Matthew Agvent, a spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Agriculture, said a producer with a broiler breeder chicken facility noticed “increased mortality” in their flock late in the afternoon on Sunday. This facility housed just over 71,000 chickens.

Agvent said the producer contacted the Georgia Poultry Lab Network (GPLN) that evening, and on Monday GPLN tested samples collected from the facility at its lab. Late Monday afternoon, GPLN confirmed the lab tests were positive for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).
