Former Democratic state Rep. Karen Bennett of Stone Mountain pleaded guilty Wednesday to a federal charge of making false statements on a 2020 application for pandemic unemployment benefits.

Bennett admitted as part of a negotiated plea to illegally collecting $13,940 of unemployment benefits by claiming she could not work for her physical therapy company Metro Therapy for a few months during the pandemic, when she was able to work in an administrative position with Metro Therapy from home.

She also did not disclose income she received from a church, which amounted to $905 every week while she was receiving unemployment benefits.
