The Georgia Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday announced the arrest of a former Georgia police chief, who is being charged with 28 counts of theft by taking and 28 counts of theft by conversion.

In January, the GBI received a request from the Atkinson County Sheriff’s Office in South Georgia to investigate the then-Pearson Chief of Police Woodrow “Peewee” Wilson Burkhalter’s misappropriation of funds from the Atkinson County Christmas Fund.

The fund, which was developed to provide underprivileged children with gifts during the holiday season, had the 53-year-old police official designated as one of the managers.
