Twelve years ago, a Georgia company said yes to a request from the federal government no one had said yes to before: Can you get two Americans, sick with Ebola, out of Liberia and back to the United States for treatment?

The Ebola epidemic that began in West Africa in 2014 was the largest outbreak of the disease since Ebola was discovered in the 1970s. The health system in Monrovia was struggling when two Americans — a doctor and a volunteer — got sick.

The federal government reached out to Cartersville-based Phoenix Air to see if they could transport them to the U.S. for treatment.
