A stenographer’s job is to capture cold, hard facts and transmit them to the official record. But what if the facts won’t cooperate? What if the heart gets in the way? In an award-winning new play by Jennifer Blackmer, “I Carry Your Heart With Me,” Vietnam war stenographer Esther finds herself entangled in a web of heartbreaking stories and troubling puzzles as she records the testimonies of returning soldiers.

The acclaimed new work is the latest production at Horizon Theatre, on stage March 14-April 5. Director Lisa Adler and actor Carolyn Cook, who portrays the role of Esther, joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes to discuss the show.

“I could not put it down. I never read a play start to finish, it was such a powerful story, it had me on the hook all the way to the end,” said Adler. Cook added, “This play gives the audience an opportunity to empathize with those returning veterans, with other returning veterans, and with each other.”
