The American Red Cross of Georgia is calling on donors to give blood.

The organization claims that due to severe winter weather across the country and the wildfires in Southern California, over 500 blood drives in January have been canceled. According to the Red Cross, this has resulted in more than 12,000 uncollected blood and platelet donations.

“Winter weather across the country has significantly impacted our ability to collect lifesaving blood donations,” said Garrett Reid, Regional Donor Services Executive for the American Red Cross of Georgia.

“In just the past two days, snow and ice in Georgia has resulted in around 700 uncollected blood and platelet donations. When it is safe to do so, we urge everyone to make an appointment and roll up their sleeves. Donors of all blood types are needed to help save lives,” Reid added.

With more reported winter storms that could strain the already low blood supply, along with hazardous road conditions making it even more difficult for residents to travel, the need for donors has proven urgent.

Hundreds of donation opportunities have been scheduled throughout the state from Jan. 22 to Feb. 15. Potential donors are asked to book online or on the Red Cross app, where they can also find a drive close to them.

Residents who give before Jan. 26 will automatically be placed in a raffle to win a trip for two to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans next month, as well an $1,000 gift card to cover expenses.

Specific Red Cross locations will also give away gift cards and other prize drawings for those donating.
