Atlanta author of 'Tough as a Mother' says she wanted to fill the void of support for working moms

As Mother’s Day approaches, ESPN anchor and Atlanta author Jenn Hildreth shines a powerful light on motherhood and leadership in journalism and sports.

“There’s a real strength of sharing your struggles,” Hildreth tells WABE’s “Morning Edition.” “What initially started off as a pretty individual journey for each of us, wanting to share our stories, grew into something so much bigger, because we realized there’s such a void out there of support for working moms.”

Hildreth is an Emmy Award-winning sports broadcaster with more than two decades of experience as a play-by-play commentator, studio host and reporter. But sometimes, she laughs, it all boiled down to sitting on a suitcase in the Atlanta airport bathroom, pumping milk while trying to take a call.

Hildreth and co-author Aimee Leone of Fox Sports wrote the book “Tough as a Mother” to send a message that more mothers are needed in the workplace, and that women can do both superbly.

“And we don’t want them feeling they have to choose between family and career,” Hildreth said.

The notion of women trying to maintain a healthy home life/work life balance isn’t new. But Hildreth shared with WABE why the topic remains so timely.
