An Atlanta nonprofit has been bailing women out of jail ahead of Mother’s Day weekend as part of a larger effort to help those in pre-trial detention overcome challenges such as finding stable housing or a job.

Chabreya Hampton said she was arrested and taken to the Atlanta City Detention Center earlier this year, where she sat for about 30 days, not knowing when or how she would get out.

“I’m risking losing places to stay,” Hampton said. “Lost my job. My daughter had to move from this school to another school to be where my mom lives. Basically, getting out, having to start all the way over again.”

After another detainee referred Hampton to Women on the Rise Georgia, she said the organization moved fast to take care of her $5,000 bond and reunite her with her daughter, who’s 15 years old and “well aware of what’s going on around her.”
