Bibb County Sheriff’s Office To Auction Confiscated Guns

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office in Macon will auction off confiscated guns for the first time this Saturday. The auction stems from a state law that was changed four years ago, said Bibb County Sheriff David Davis.

Before 2012, unclaimed weapons and other firearms no longer needed as evidence could be destroyed to be used as scrap metal, Davis said.

But in 2012, state lawmakers passed a law that requires agencies to find the rightful owner for the guns, and if the guns are unclaimed, sell them at auction to licensed dealers.

Davis said he understands why some local law enforcement agencies have had concerns about auctioning the guns.

“It seems like we’re putting a lot of guns out on the street but that is one of things that the law requires us to do and we can have a discussion about whether that’s a good idea or not, but that’s — we’re having to do what the law says,” Davis said.

Davis said the Sheriff’s Office had collected hundreds of guns over the years, and was running out of space.

A spokesperson for the Atlanta Police Department said it’s had no discussion of auctioning weapons.

The Bibb County guns will be sold at auction this Saturday in Macon, Davis said.
