Atlanta United is saying goodbye to its longest-serving player in club history on Saturday, as goalkeeper and team captain Brad Guzan retires from professional soccer after a career that has spanned over two decades.
One of the premier players for United during its inaugural season in 2017, Guzan has played a record nine seasons with the Major League Soccer club. He announced his retirement on Tuesday in a post thanking teammates, family and fans for their support in allowing him to “live this dream.”
“Twenty-one years is a long time,” Guzan says in the post. “As I prepare to hang up my gloves, put away the jersey, and clean off my boots one final time, I know this journey was never about me — it’s always been about the people who walk beside me.”
