A local superintendent accused of repeatedly using a racial slur in taped conversations resigned Friday.

Former Buford City Schools Superintendent Geye Hamby submitted his resignation to the school board. The board had placed Hamby on administrative leave earlier this week after the tapes surfaced as part of a lawsuit filed against Hamby and the school district.

Mary Ingram, a former teacher’s aide for the school system, claims she was fired due to racial discrimination and retaliation for political activism.

In his resignation letter, Hamby apologizes “…for any actions that may have created adversity for this community and the Buford School District.”

“I think the apology coupled with the resignation is an admission,” said Ingram’s attorney, Ed Buckley.

Buckley says Hamby’s resignation is a step in the right direction but says the lawsuit will continue.

“I do think that there’s more that needs to occur,” Buckley said. “Mr. Hamby, in our opinion, did not act alone in this process in the process leading up to our client’s termination.”

Buckley believes Buford School Board Chair Phillip Beard is also on the recordings, although he isn’t heard using racial slurs.

“We do not think that he [Beard] reported that to anyone or took any steps as a result of it and that he should’ve,” Buckley said. “And we think that he needs to answer for that.”

Attorneys for Beard and the school board did not respond to requests for comment and haven’t confirmed Beard is on the tapes.
