The Chamblee Police Department has named Officer Brandon White as its first LGBTQ liaison.
White says he hopes to give people in marginalized communities a safe place to turn when they need help.
He brings personal experience to the role. In 2012, White was attacked by a group of men in his neighborhood because he was gay. White said the case showed him a different side to the police and led to him pursue a career in law enforcement.
He went on to become a police officer and now wants to help bridge the gap between law enforcement and the LGBTQ community.
White said he recently attended a national training with multiple other LGBTQ liaisons from around the metro Atlanta area to learn how departments around the country improve their outreach to those communities.
