Cinnabon Takes on Pizza?

Every mall-goer knows the smell of Cinnabon rolls just out of the oven.

Now, the Atlanta-based chain is trying something different.  Pizza.

“When the Pizzabon was first pitched to me by our R&D team, I thought they were nuts,” says Cinnabon president.

But it didn’t take long for her to warm up to a pizza-fied version of the company’s bread-and-butter product.

The initial Pizzabon is like a sweet take on the traditional pepperoni pizza — no anchovies though.

As Cinnabon expands at venues like universities and airports—Cole says the chain has to take a few chances.

“We do wild and crazy stuff just to see what people will like, and to help us build a portfolio of menu offerings.”

Ken Bernhardt is a marketing professor at Georgia State.  He says people like pizza, and generally have a favorable view of Cinnabon.  And that’s probably enough to get customers to try a Pizzabon.

“The key to their success will be determined by how consumers respond to it after trying it.”

In other words, repeat customers.

Right now, pizza-bons are only available at the company’s Cumberland Mall location.

Cinnabon says even if the idea takes off, it will take some time before a chain-wide rollout.
