After months of consideration, the DeKalb County Commission has voted to raise water rates 10% every year for the next decade to pay for water and sewage infrastructure.

During the months commissioners considered versions of this plan, residents voiced concerns about the affordability of increasing water bills. In the end, community members organized and negotiated with county officials to build in protections for low-income households in the final version of the plan.

Between water main breaks, deadlines for the county’s federal consent decree and more, county officials say they need money for major infrastructure improvements urgently.
