In 2022, Pennsylvania state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta made history as the first openly gay Black man to run for U.S. Senate. Although he finished third in the three-way Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, Kenyatta proved that race, sexuality or economic status do not always determine electability.

The film “Kenyatta: Do Not Wait Your Turn” documents this historic run and screens at the Out on Film Festival in Atlanta this weekend. In this interview, Kenyatta and director Tim Harris join “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes to talk about the film.

“Because there is going to be a bunch of people who are going to be inspired and have their world opened up. Not to say ‘Look how great Malcolm is,’ but really to turn that mirror on themselves and say ‘Wow, look how great I am,’” Rep. Kenyatta said.

The film “Kenyatta: Do Not Wait Your Turn” screens at the Out on Film Festival Saturday at noon at the Midtown Art Cinema. More information is available here.
