If you’ve ever felt scared about going to the dentist, “Doctor De Soto” is the story for you. The lovable 1982 children’s book by William Steig, is a tale of a mouse dentist who’s more nervous about his patients than they are about him – no wonder, given that some might be inclined to eat mice.

Now adapted for the stage by playwright Idris Goodwin, “Doctor De Soto” will be on the Hertz Stage at the Alliance Theatre, Jan. 18 – March 2. The play is directed by Mark Valdez, who recently joined Lois Reitzes on “City Lights” to share more about this fresh adaptation of the animal kingdom’s bravest dentist.

Valdez described the adaptation as a fresh take on the classic tale with some creative updates. “We’ve introduced Young De Soto, the couple’s child, who takes center stage in this version,” Valdez explained. “It allows young audiences to see themselves in the story and go on a journey of moral courage and compassion.”

The play also incorporates shadow puppetry, designed by Lynn Jeffries, to bring whimsical elements, like the fox’s larger-than-life tooth, to life.

The production features an original score by Brandon Bush, blending 1980s-style beats with the playful energy of classic Warner Bros. cartoons. “It’s this rhythmic, soulful Bugs Bunny soundscape,” said Valdez.

Steig’s illustrations inspired the set design and incorporated modern touches to reflect today’s urban landscapes while retaining the charm of the original book.

“Dr. De Soto” is a family-friendly production that encourages audiences to consider the moral dilemmas of doing what’s right, even when it’s risky. “It’s a story where the young hero teaches the adults an important lesson,” Valdez said. “We really land on the side of compassion, paired with care and caution.”
