Election officials say a record number of Georgians cast ballots in this year’s general election.

Secretary of State Brian Kemp announced early Wednesday that more than 4 million votes had been counted. That breaks the record of 3.9 million votes set in 2008.

Kemp says final numbers won’t be available until the election results are certified. But there were 5,445,078 active voters on Election Day, and at least 4,045,613 votes were cast, meaning turnout was higher than 74 percent.
