This Fourth of July holiday will see millions of Georgians engaging in fun, sun, travel and entertainment. Here is what you need to know for the upcoming holiday weekend.
Weather for Atlanta’s Fourth of July weekend
According to the National Weather Service Atlanta, hot conditions are expected to continue into the weekend.
Highs will range from 90 to 99 degrees from July 1 to July 4, with the heat index on July 4 expected to be between 98 and 105 degrees.
Officials are encouraging residents to keep their safety in mind, including staying hydrated and taking frequent breaks in the shade or A/C.
Busy Fourth of July travel expected in Georgia
Georgia is expected to see a record number of residents traveling during the holiday period, with AAA predicting that 2.4 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home.
The association reports that more than 2.1 million people are expected to drive to their destinations, a 1% increase from 2025. In addition, AAA estimates that 163,982 Georgians rely on air travel, with another 109,472 choosing alternative transportation.
“For many families, traveling for Independence Day isn’t just a trip, it’s a tradition,” said Debbie Haas, vice president of travel for AAA, in a Friday press release. “With an extended holiday travel period, we expect busy roads, steady demand for flights, and continued interest in cruises across many parts of the country.”
The Georgia Department of Transportation announced that all interstate lane closures will be suspended beginning Friday, July 3, at 6 a.m. through Monday, July 6, at 6 a.m. to increase safety and reduce delays.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport officials announced that more than 4 million people will travel to, from or through Atlanta from June 26 through July 7.
Hartsfield officials urge travelers to arrive at least two and a half hours before their scheduled departure times for domestic flights and three hours early for international flights.
Passengers are also encouraged to visit ATL.com, the airport’s official website, for updates regarding parking options, security wait times and concessionaire options.
Atlanta Fourth of July events
For those choosing to stay home this holiday weekend, there are a variety of events to partake in within the metro Atlanta area.
July 3
Welcome to Atlanta Party – Held at the Margaret Mitchell House and hosted by the Atlanta History Center, the free event will feature a DJ, community resources from across the city, books and merchandise available for sale. The event will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
July 4
Northside Hospital Peachtree Road Race – The iconic 10K race returns to Atlanta the morning of July 4. Although registration is closed, spectators across the city are encouraged to cheer on racers. The event begins at Lenox Square, with the finish line located at Piedmont Park.
Stone Mountain Park – The 3,200-acre park will host its new 250th Celebration Drone & Light Show and Firework celebration beginning at 9:30 p.m. Guests are encouraged to arrive by 3 p.m. to secure a parking spot and viewing spot for the festivities.
Jimmy Carter Library & Museum – The museum, which honors the former president and Georgia native, will offer free admission to the public in celebration of the holiday.
Truist Park Pregame Block Party – Arrive early before the Braves v. Mets game for an electric mix of live entertainment and nonstop energy at The Battery Atlanta, celebrating Independence Day! A fireworks display is scheduled for the Marietta complex after the conclusion of the game, which begins at 8:08 p.m.
Roof at Ponce City Market – A “Rooftop Rodeo” will be held at the Ponce City Roof from 11 a.m. to midnight. The celebration will include live DJs, line dancing, a mechanical bull, contests, prizes, food and drinks.
