Fulton County Schools is the State’s Largest Charter System

The Fulton County school district officially became a charter system July 1.  That makes them the largest charter school system in the state. The designation will allow the Fulton County Schools to apply for waivers from some state laws. For example, superintendent Robert Avossa says the district will ask for more flexibility when hiring teachers.

“For a person who has a degree in public relations or in English, not having a teacher’s certification and coming to work for us and waiving that in some instance might really help us get top talent,” Avossa explains.

Schools can also request their own waivers. Avossa says they’ll do that through the creation of governance councils.

“We’re going to spend a full year training all the governance councils and the principals and central office about this new paradigm,” he says.

20 Fulton County schools will participate the first year while the district transitions to charter status. About 22,500 students will be affected.
