In January, Georgia’s Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities announced it had reached an agreement to end federal oversight of the agency.

Since 2010, the U.S. Department of Justice has monitored the department as part of a consent decree to ensure compliance with several provisions to improve the state’s mental healthcare.

The settlement stems from a Supreme Court decision requiring states to move away from institutionalized psychiatric care to a community-based model.
