Avanti Moore is ready. She says her journey to graduating from Georgia Gwinnett College has been five years in the making. Initially, Moore was nervous about going back to school to further her education.

More than a decade had passed since she graduated from high school in 2007, but she didn’t let the fear stop her. One day, the wife and mother of two had an epiphany.

“So, about 2020, I had just had my son in 2019, so it was about a year postpartum,” Moore explained. “We were home, and I literally just was saying to myself, ‘It’s time for me to be me.’ Yeah. ‘It’s time for me to do something for me.’”

That’s when Moore decided to make a move. She applied and got accepted into GGC. Fast-forward to now, Moore is gearing up to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Health Science, with a concentration in public health.

On Wednesday’s edition of “Closer Look,” part of the program’s annual graduation series, Moore talked with host Rose Scott about her academic journey. She spoke candidly about starting her college journey amid the pandemic, navigating her daughter’s cancer journey and how getting involved on campus helped her grow as a leader and public speaker.

”These last five years have meant everything,” said Moore. ” I have evolved. I’ve changed. I’ve grown. I’ve experienced some highs. I’ve experienced some lows.”

Moore says she chose to study public health because it’s evolving and it embodies community, something she says she learned early on from her parents.
