The state commission that enforces rules about campaign spending has a new policy to handle conflicts of interest amongst its members.
The new Georgia state ethics commission policy says commissioners should recuse themselves from a case if they or someone in their family has a personnel or financial stake in the matter.
“I think the intent here is to not only provide guidelines themselves but to provide some reassurance to the public that they’re going to act in an impartial and transparent manner about how they’re going to handle cases, and not handling cases in which there could be some allegation of self-interest,” said Stefan Ritter, the director of the commission.
