Has Georgia’s Flu Season Peaked Yet?

The Georgia Department of Public Health will release new numbers on the state’s flu season Friday. But it’s not clear yet whether we’ve seen the worst of the toughest flu season in recent memory.

Andi Shane is a Pediatric Infectious Disease Physician at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. She thinks this year’s flu season peaked last week. Still, CHOA is waiting to see what will happen next week.

But Wellstar, Georgia’s largest health system, thinks otherwise.

“I just think that because we’ve had the cold snap, we were all together in our homes and our kids were out of school that we will see another increase in the flu volume,” said Freda Lyon, who is the vice president of emergency services.

Lyon said Wellstar is seeing a 30 percent spike in flu patients this January compared to last January.
