Google Fiber announced this week it’s halting operations in cities where the company was in talks to bring in services, but will continue services in cities where it’s already launched, like in Atlanta.

Despite continued service, Jan Dawson, chief analyst at Jackdaw Research said the changes could still affect operations here.

“I could see them cutting costs even in cities that they are already active in already,” Dawson said. “Because I think this partly about Alphabet, Google’s parent company, becoming more disciplined about some of its financial investments, and trying to reduce costs, so you could see some slowdown even in cities where they’re already active.”

In a statement, Google Fiber said it will continue operations in the metro Atlanta area.

“Google Fiber isn’t leaving metro Atlanta. We’re still thrilled to be your neighbor and continue to work towards offering superfast internet to residents,” said Amol Naik, Google Fiber’s Southeast head of external affairs.
