Mayor Reed leaves for trade mission to China

Earlier this afternoon, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed boarded a plane along with city economic development officials and area business leaders.

They’ll be in China trying to convince business and political leaders there, to invest in Atlanta.

The trade mission to China is a 9 day trip. Mayor Reed says it will take some time before he and others know if the trip will result in Chinese investment in Atlanta.

“What we’re trying to do is garden here.”

And Reed argues he has a green thumb for investment. He says past trips to the United Kingdom, Amsterdam and Paris led to short and long term growth for Atlanta’s air cargo industry. As for the China trip, the Mayor has been working on his sales pitch.

“I think the fact that Atlanta and Beijing are both Olympic cities is a good starting place and the fact that we have so many global brands that are already in China like UPS, like Coca-Cola, like Delta Airlines and like CNN also gives us an advantage,” he says.

Reed wants Atlanta to get a piece of the $3 trillion he says China could invest in the United States over the next 10 years.
