The National Library of Medicine cites numerous studies that have found children raised in same-sex parent families fare just as well as children raised in any other family structural environment. Yet, the National Center for LGBTQ Rights reveals that gay and transgender parents still face obstacles, discrimination, societal stigma and costly legal battles.
Tim’m T. West and Jon Gulick are proud fathers in different stages of their parenting journeys. West is a seasoned father — his daughter is 38 — while Gulick is relatively a new father — his son is three years old. Both men are gay and understand the layered challenges people of the LGBTQ community have to navigate when trying to start a family, as well as raising children.
That’s why the men are encouraging gay and heterosexual men to attend Men Having Babies’ annual conference, which is being held in Atlanta from June 5 to June 7 at the W Atlanta Downtown.
West, who serves as the executive director of the Rustin Institute for Leadership Development, and Gulick, who serves as a board member for Men Having Babies, were featured guests on Wednesday’s edition of “Closer Look.”
The men talked with show host Rose Scott about their fatherhood journeys, the history and mission of the nonprofit Men Having Babies and the upcoming conference.
