The Midtown skyline is one of the most recognizable representations of Atlanta. To the region’s many commuters stuck in deadlocked daily morning traffic, it also may be one of the most frustrating.
According to the Atlanta Regional Commission, the population of that skyline during the weekday is very different from the population that lives in Midtown full time. While 16,347 people lived in Midtown in 2014, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, 76,854 people worked there.
Of those who worked in Midtown, 97 percent were employed in the neighborhood but lived outside of it. Of those who actually lived in Midtown, 86 percent were employed outside of the neighborhood. A “significant number” of employees in the area commuted 10-24 miles to get to work.
