It’s been almost a decade and a half since Youth Lagoon first emerged from Boise, Idaho, with The Year of Hibernation, a dream pop debut that earned cult status for its raw intimacy and bedroom mystique. A lot has changed since Trevor Powers, the artist behind Youth Lagoon, retired in 2016, but he revived the project in 2022.
Powers’ latest album, “Rarely Do I Dream,” is a playful, slightly Americana-inspired album, drawn from a box of old home movies in his parents’ basement. The project weaves together personal history and mythic storytelling, bound tightly with Powers’ distinctive voice.
Youth Lagoon is performing at the Masquerade on April 19. Powers sat down with “City Lights” producer Jacob Smulian to discuss his latest album, his songwriting ethos, and more.
