In the early 20th century, the small square mile of Decatur known as “Beacon Hill” was a thriving African-American community. In a new documentary by Jarret Ray, “Displaced but Not Erased,” the filmmaker talks with several former residents of the area about how urban renewal and gentrification changed the landscape forever. “It was a place that meant a lot to a lot of people; it was more than just a home; it was a village, a community,” said Ray.
The film will screen at the DeKalb History Center on March 13, with a Q&A afterward.
Ray joined “City Lights” producer Summer Evans to discuss the making of this documentary.
