Former House Speaker and Georgia Congressman Newt Gingrich called Georgia a “key battleground” at a town hall for the Trump campaign Monday at Kennesaw State University.

Gingrich spoke to a crowd of more than 100 supporters, some who were wearing newly-minted shirts with the word “deplorables.” Groups of students in between classes also stood towards the back of the room to hear Gingrich speak.

Before criticizing Hillary Clinton at length, Gingrich started the town hall with a call for prayers for Clinton after she left early at a Sept. 11 memorial Sunday, having been recently diagnosed with pneumonia.

“She is our opponent. She’s not our enemy. We wish her well,” he said. “I’ve known Hillary for 24 years. And I was little concerned yesterday and I think that none of us wish her ill. We want to defeat her fairly and honorably, but we don’t want her to be physically, in any way, ill.”

Gingrich, who used to teach a controversial course at Kennesaw State University, then took the town hall to level criticisms at his political adversaries.

“You almost have to be deranged to be a modern liberal,” he said.

He said that voting for Clinton would be “extraordinarily dangerous” to the country’s rule of law.

Gingrich had been on the short-list to be Donald Trump’s running mate. When asked whether he’d be part of a possible Trump cabinet, he didn’t give any specifics.

“I think it is reasonable to say that I will have dramatically more influence in a Trump administration than I would in a Clinton administration,” he said.

Britton Wright, a senior majoring in philosophy, attended the event, said he’s undecided about the presidential election, but was against Trump and remarks he’s made in the past.

“He’s only seeing things through one lens, towards one goal, ‘make America great again.’ When was America great for everyone?” Wright said. “When did the ‘again’ come into play, because, 30s, ’40s, 50s, it wasn’t so great for black people or people of color in general.”
