On June 5, 2017, Dr. Raphael Bostic became the 15th president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. It’s a role that oversees the economic wellbeing of all or most of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and Louisiana — a region that is far from a monolith.

But Bostic came into office determined to understand the economic strengths and hardships of every corner of the southeastern U.S. He challenged his team to have a maximum effect with their time and hear the concerns of people from every background in each of his six states.

Bostic found by bringing together different members of the public with the same problem, they were able to form new coalitions and investments that helped make changes. It was part of his mission to show there’s still value in community engagement, and in return, value in institutions.
