State Rep. Bee Nguyen on Wednesday remembered the victims of shootings at three spas in Georgia a year earlier and talked about how the AAPI community in Georgia has tried to heal.

Six women of Asian descent were among the eight people killed on March 16, 2021.

Nguyen says recently introduced bills that restrict how teachers can talk about race in the classroom makes it harder to address these issues.

“A bill like that is not going to help us move forward, because part of what we also need to do is teach the history of Asian people living in this country and also have room to talk about the current events happening as well,” said Nguyen.

The atrocity in Atlanta motivated many people to get involved in fighting to promote awareness about ongoing violence against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
