From smartphones to remote work, Americans are spending more time sitting and staring at screens than ever before. Now a new book argues that lifestyle may be reshaping our bodies in ways many people do not realize.

Manoush Zomorodi, host of NPR’s “TED Radio Hour,” teamed up with researchers at Columbia University to study how screen-heavy lives affect physical health. Her new book, “Body Electric: The Hidden Health Costs of the Digital Age and New Science to Reclaim Your Well-Being,” looks at rising rates of fatigue, back pain, poor sleep and chronic disease linked to sedentary habits.

The book builds on a podcast of the same name and included a study involving more than 20,000 people worldwide testing short “movement breaks” during the day.
