Not even half a year in operation, but Olivia Doyle’s business is already turning heads. She drives the streets of Atlanta in a hearse. But it’s not your average 2004 Cadillac DeVille. After buying the hearse from a funeral home in Villa Rica, she converted the back of the vehicle into a mobile bookshop.
In July, she founded The Grim Reader Bookshop. Now, Doyle travels in her hearse, called “Winnie,” to multiple events and festivals across metro Atlanta. She sells a diverse assortment of books from the horror genre, representing all ages and different communities.
For Friday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Doyle pulled up to WABE in her mobile bookshop and talked with program host Rose Scott for Halloween. She discussed her new chapter as a small business owner, what inspired her to put a bookshop in the back of a hearse, why building community is important to her, and how the horror genre can be a great escape even in troubling times.
