Y’allywood Festival Brings Southern Indie Cinema To Avondale

There is no question that Hollywood has set up shop in Atlanta, but filmmakers around the Southeast and outside of the studio system are still vying for the chance to be seen. Enter: the Y’allywood Film Festival. Begun in 2014, its aim is to provide a home for independent movies made here in the region.

“A lot of film festivals in Georgia are international festivals,” says Ruti Jones, co-founder of Y’allywood. “In terms of actually getting your movie in front of people, it’s still hard to do. You can put it online and you can submit it to a million festivals, but the chances that your family here at home, your friends are going to be able to see it, is a little bit harder to do.”

The Y’allywood Film Festival at Avondale Estate’s Towne Cinema opens on Thursday, Sept. 29 and runs through Oct. 2.
