5 Security Fence Breaches At Atlanta Airport Since 2004
Three times since 2007, intruders reached runways at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport after getting past security fences or gates at the airport’s perimeter.
The Associated Press identified the incidents from 2007, 2012 and 2014 as part of an investigation that identified five perimeter breaches over the last decade at the nation’s busiest airport.
Nationally, there have been 268 breaches at 31 major U.S. airports between January 2004 and January 2015.
Incidents ranged from fence jumpers taking shortcuts and intoxicated drivers crashing through barriers, to mentally ill intruders looking to hop flights. No breach was terrorism-related.
Airports say breaches are relatively rare. Security measures typically include fences, cameras and patrols, but there are gaps. Not all of the miles of fences are routinely patrolled or covered by video surveillance.
